A grant of arms was bestowed commonly to stepping down Baron and Baroness to
give their court barony more precedence, before the provisions for Thegn and
Banthegn where written into law. As of the time I left, a Court Barony
carried no precedence and a Thegn or Banthegn carried a grant of arms and
the provision to be ahead of all other grant of arms in order of precedence
except founding Barons. They allow the use of Baron or Baroness as an
alternate title, but use Thegn or Banthegn in precessions etc. Yes it
allows you to wear the baronial device upon your coronet, and augments your
arms. (**disclaimer..This is of a year or so ago**) This was also made
retro active to all previous landed Barons and Baroness. So we have a
closet Thegn and Banthegn in Brwyn Gwylad (Not to name names, but their
names sound like Lyonel and Aquilane)

Not to many ladies were very fond of the title Banthegn:) And it has made
many a poor Thegn want to jump from the nearest cliff lest they hear any
more "thegn" jokes. :) Please feel free to spread the bad jokes evenly over
the few of us here. I apologize for the rambling and bad humour, but I
haven't had my second shot of caffeine this morning.

Duncan 'wild' Thegn of the March of Mons Tonitrus
