A suggestion to those who mentioned valid concerns about travelling long
distances alone, and the rising cost at the pump, and indeed, to all in
general.

Find out who else is going to the distant event from your local area, and
arrange a car-pool or a caravan.

Gas and other assorted travel charges and responsibilities can be split up
among the event-goers in a car-pool. Remember the wear and tear that is
being done to the vehicle, though, and don't raise a fuss if the owner
doesn't chip in as much as everyone else for the gas. It's the owner that
will eventually have to tend to the brakes, oil changes, and various other
maintenance factors that a long trip will have influence on.

As for a caravan, you don't have the opportunity to share costs so much,
but you are travelling in a group. Tag your vehicles in some creative (and
legal!) way so you can tell which ones are you and which are the other
drivers on the road, and make a plan to stick together and look out and
make sure everyone is keeping together. Arrange to corral at the rest
stops, or a McDonald's half-way through. It takes some planning, but it
can be done, and without the expense of cb's or radios.
