agreed ... but a more reasonable explanation would be that shields
are not allowed to be used as offensive weaponry (i really miss the
old days ... grin), ergo if an oppoents rim hits are not allowed to
count, neither should your's - even if your opponent does the
maneuvering (one weakness of using a round (my fave), is that a good
opponent man use it against you by putting iot where they want it
...) ... 

in reality, in many cultures and time periods,  a shield *is* a mass
weapon and was used accordingly  ... liek all mass weaponry, take a
mass, get the mass moving, hit a target with narrow metal rim or
metal boss, energy transferred to small point of contact ... result
breaking, crushing, laceration.  like most mass weaponry, they
require skill to use and can seriously injure, hence the sca
game-rules limit their offensive use and closely regulate their
construction ... and this on a whole is probably a good thing.

round, metal bossed & rimmed, hangs on the wall by it's shoulder
strap ... its padded "fighting cover" is packed away somewhere.
