In the interest of helping everyone train for Gulf War (and warfighting in
general), I offer the following:
At Steppes fighter practice this last weekend, I introduced an old Caidan
game called hogshead. It's known by a number of other names in other places
as well. This game is a rather fun way to get fighters cooperating,
communicating, and maintaining their focus on a goal other than just killing
whoever's in front of them.
The rules of the game are simple. You start with a medicine ball (or other
heavy, round object 15-20 pounds in weight), and two goals that are 20 - 30
paces apart (depending on the condition of the fighters, and how many you
have on the field).
1) the ball may not be picked up - it must be moved with the feet, shield,
weapon, etc.
2) to score, the ball must touch the goal
3) when a fighter dies, he returns to the goal he is defending in order to
resurrect by touching his goal
4) fighters who are "wounded" must be "killed" by a team-mate before they
can resurrect
5) the team that gets 2 points more than the other team wins the game.
6) war-rules apply to the fighting (no holds called for dropped weapons,
unit engagement rules apply, etc)
Any number of fighters may play, though it is recommended for teams of 3-15
in size.
The game is a heck of a lot of fun, and will really help you develop the
skills needed to maintain a sense of where your teammates are, where you are
in terms of achieving your objective, and to communicate with your teammates
despite the confusion and chaos of a battlefield.
Try it out - you'll be surprised at how fun this is....
Mordock von Rügen (AKA Dux - as in badly misspelled plural water fowl)
