Children's Activities at Estrella War XVI

Once again this year's Estrella War is proud to sponsor supervised
children's activities for those age four and up who attend the event. The
Children's Corner is also a great place to make friends and will host many
interesting and informative things to do. You won't want to miss out on
all the fun! The Children's Corner will be located behind the Grand Court
Pavilion. Because it is in the camping area, there will be GRASS for the
children to play on.

Since there are no other playgrounds at the Estrella War site, we
encourage parents to bring their children to our area so they remain safe
and supervised as much as possible. Activities will be at the discretion
of the Children's Steward, Lady Sorcha, and will be contingent upon the
number of children present, their ages and interests, as well as donations
and resources on hand. As always, adult interest and support is
encouraged and appreciated. Please be sure to make appropriate
arrangements for your children, no matter what your plans are at the war!

Rules & Regulations -

The hours of operation of the Estrella War Children's Corner will be 9:00
AM - 3:00 PM Thursday - Sunday, February 16-19, 2000. You are welcome to
bring your child for a maximum duration of two hours each day, unless
other arrangements have been made in advance. It is requested that parents
make a donation of supplies or contribute volunteer hours to the
Children's Corner. (We remind parents that the Children's Corner is not a
baby-sitting service and is provided as a courtesy to event participants,
your support will help us make their stay at this years Estrella War
something special.) Children must be potty trained, able to dress
themselves, and be able to eat regular food. As a rule, lunch will not be
provided. However, we will provide nutritious snacks and drinks while the
Children's Corner is open. Participants must be signed in/out by a
parent,
guardian, or other responsible adult, and should be picked up no later
than 3:00 PM. Children should be attired in simple garb and should be
properly identified with the official wrist bracelet for the war. We ask
that they do not bring personal articles with them while in our care, the
Children's Corner Steward will not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Finally, parents will be responsible for disciplining their children,
unruly behavior will be cause for separation and could be returned to you
if necessary.

Planned Activities -

This year the Children's Corner has been designed to accommodate two age
groups; 4-8 and 9-13. We will have two pavilions set up, one for each age
group, and appropriate activities planned for them. The younger kids will
be able to play games, make arts and crafts, listen to stories, and enjoy
outdoor recreation on the GRASS. The older kids will attend hands on
classes in the Children's Collegium, as well as have more complex games,
arts and crafts activities, and other entertainment. Each group can
participate in special diversions like scavenger hunts, children's parade,
field trips and other fun outings as they are identified.

Donations and Volunteers -

For those who can contribute time and resources, volunteers and donations
of materials are always appreciated.

Our wish list of preferred donations includes, but is not limited to;
complete simple board games, puzzles, blocks, coloring books, storybooks,
outside playsets, jump ropes, balls, badminton, as well as arts & craft
supplies like paint, paper, glue, glitter, beads, clay, and crayons. We
also need donations of nutritious food and drinks!

Our volunteer needs encompass the following: Shift Workers, 2 shifts at 3
hours each, and 2 people per shift per day. Special Activities
Coordinators: for Field Trips, Scavenger Hunts, Children's Parade, etc.
Collegium Instructors: Adult and Youth teachers, two (2) classes per day
for four (4) days.

For more information, if you want to make suggestions, contribute
donations, or have any comments, please feel free to contact Lady Sorcha,
Estrella War Children's Steward, via e-mail at wren at mail.mc.maricopa.edu
or by telephone (480) 964-1226 before 9:00 PM Arizona time.

MORE SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR CHILDREN

Last year one of the favorite games for the children was Cattle Raiding.
Following you will find an explanation of the game and the rules. This is
sponsored by an individual who is an overgrown kid who has grown up in the
SCA and knows how important it is to keep children from getting bored at
camping events. If you have any questions, contact Lord Matthew BludAx at
LdBludAx at cs.com

There will be a pre-game briefing at the Children's Corner on Thursday at
noon. At that time animals will be distributed to the various camps that
wish to participate. This game is intended for any and all....including
adults. Adults are requested to attend the briefing at the same time as
the children so the Cattle Raiding Marshal can address any questions that
you may have.

Anyone wishing to donate stuffed animals for the Cattle Raiding can drop
them off at Children's Corner located behind the area of Grand Court
Pavilion.

Cattle Raiding--101

Cattle Raiding is a simple and exciting game of steal and/or be stolen
from. Participating camps will have a corral to store their livestock and
it's the job of raider's from rival camps to steal as much livestock as
possible without being "killed".

Here's how it's done. Raider's can enter camp through any non-destructive
means, grab as much livestock as they can and escape through the front
gate. Upon exiting they have successfully acquired the livestock to place
in their own corral. If while inside the camp the Raider is tagged by any
member of the camp (guardsmen) a showdown of "paper, rock, scissors" will
determine the winner of the duel. Should the Raider win they may resume
their path to the exit with the livestock and the guardsmen are "dead" and
may not attack that particular raider again for the rest of that siege,
but the guardsmen may attack other Raiders. Should the guardsmen win the
duel, the Raider is considered dead and must leave the livestock behind.
They may not attempt another siege on that particular camp for a period of
three hours.

Rules of Cattle Raiding

The game is open to people ages 6 and up. Raiders under the age of 18
must have an adult with them while raiding. People will be held
accountable for any damages that they cause! Be respectful of other
people's property.

Raiding will occur ONLY during daylight hours from Thursday till Sunday.

Raider's will have a piece of duct tape not less than 1 foot long
somewhere on their body that is visible.

Participating camps must have a star shaped logo made of four pieces of
duct tape with each piece not less that 1 foot long placed on or next to
their front gate to signify their participation in the game.

Participating camps will have a corral (which is a large circle) made of
any feasible material (firewood works quite well) in the center of their
camp that will hold the livestock.
