Many folks I know have Gamini Salgado's The Elizabethan Underground, a
great book about
London's seedier side across the Thames. At that time the suburbs were
anything, but desirable.
Bear baiting, quacks, theatres, houses of ill repute were rampant due to
their being outside
London's legal jurisdiction. In his soon to be released book, The Bryn
Gwlad Underground,
Salgado describes the seamier side of old Bryn Gwlad. Here is part of a

Bar help at the Boar's Breast Tavern across the street from the Lion's
Theatre. Barmaids, cooks, a
tapster, and entertainers are needed to fill several positions left
vacant by war, the Plague, and
other unfortunate accidents. You will be provided with room and board,
training, if need be, as
well as, legal fees which will be deducted from your pay at a later
date. All tips to be split with the
