i got intetested via the media .... saw a couple sepearate news
segments on it (one a 60 minutes about the NY group in central park
if memory serves) and shortly afterwards got introduced to scadoan
realtime at one of the first Steppes Warlords, where i met some of my
longest running (to this day) and later rather infamous kindred ...
what can i say, i had good teachers (grin)

face it, scadian faces a whole new ball game and are competing on a
great many new fronts to get and hold membership (repeat after me,
hearts-and-minds ...). personally, i would pay less attention to
active recruitment and more to retention of new & mid-term members.

make the sca visible and welcoming, and let like minded individuals
find you of their own will. active "recruitment", especialluy in
less-understood / alternative / borderline organiztions has aquired
some level of cultish overtones that many are not comfortable with
(and in some cases rightly so)

in the modern world, your primary target-audience is alternative,
often isolated, intelligent and increasingly cyber literate .. best
initial sources are informative, *accurate*, web-presences that will
lead the interested to personal contacts in the local real-time
organization.
