RAPIER COMBAT AT PENNSIC XXX

Submitted by Master John Inchingham the Fool (inchingham at hotmail.com)

Updated 6/15/01 (AS XXXVI)

Part I--Welcome to All Rapier Combatants
Part II--Rapier Combat Schedule.
Part III--Descriptions of Rapier Activities

----------------------

WELCOME TO ALL RAPIER COMBATANTS

Unto the Rapier Combatants of the Known World doth Master John Inchingham
the Fool, Marshal-in-Charge of Fencing Activities at Pennsic XXX, extend
most courteous greetings.

This year, practitioners of the Noble Art of Defense will discover an
amazing variety of tournaments, melees, and training opportunities awaiting
them at Pennsic War--including three Pennsic FIRSTs: A Youth Rapier
Tournament; a Woods Melee and a Fort Melee. Once again, a tent and a
portion of the battlefield have been set aside specifically for rapier
activities. However, this year, selected rapier events have also been
scheduled to occur in other venues (such as in the Fort, on the Red
Tournament Field, on the Main Battlefield and in the Woods). There will be
at least one Middle Kingdom Marshal on duty on the Rapier Field from 9:00 am
to 5:00 pm from Sunday (August 12) through Friday (August 17). Midrealmers
on duty will be wearing Rapier Martial Baldrics to make identification
easier. Otherwise, free-sparring may take place as long a warranted fencing
marshal from any kingdom is present.

Tournaments and melees at Pennsic War are run according to the rules of the
the sponsoring kingdom. Lists for tournaments and melees generally open one
hour before the scheduled start time and close whenever the
Marshal-in-Charge so decrees. Unless, otherwise noted, all rapier events
take place on the Rapier Field.

Before participating in any rapier activity, you must have your protective
gear, weapons and parrying devices inspected TO YOUR KINGDOM’S STANDARDS by
a warranted rapier marshal of your own kingdom. If no marshal from your
kingdom is present at Pennsic, you may instead be inspected to Society
standards by any available marshal. A sticker will then be attached to your
helm, mask or other head protection, indicating that you have been
inspected. (Blades will be inspected but NOT stickered.) Once you have
been inspected, you are responsible for maintaining the integrity of your
protective gear at war. If you lose your sticker or change any part of your
protective gear, you must be reinspected. If any warranted rapier marshal
sees a potential safety problem in your protecive gear, that marshal may
reinspect you (keeping in mind that protective gear need only pass your
kingdom’s standards NOT the standards of the kingdom hosting the rapier
activity in which you are participating). Because weapons and parrying
devices must meet the specifications of the kingdom hosting each rapier
activity, weapons and parrying devices must be reinspected before each
activity begins. The host kingdom’s Marshal-in-Charge will determine how
this is to be accomplished.

Each host kingdom will specify which weapons are allowed in each tournament,
melee or other activity. A listing of “Schlagers” might include equivalent
blades, or it might not, depending upon the host kingdom’s rules. The same
would be true for a listing of “Epees and Foils.” Remember that schlagers
and other heavy blades may NOT be used against epees or foils or other light
fencing blades. If a tournament allows “All Weapons,” a Default Weapon may
be specified. Rubberband Guns may be used in some melees. Kingdoms may
also specify which dagger blades are acceptable and which are not.

Authorizations will be conducted depending on the availablility of marshals
from your kingdom. Fencers (from any kingdom) who authorize for the first
time at Pennsic XXX will NOT be allowed to participate in Middle Kingdom
sponsored MELEES. This ban does not prevent such fencers from participating
in Midrealm tournaments nor does it apply to melees hosted by kingdoms other
than the Midrealm. Midrealm rapier combatants will not be allowed to fence
with epees unless they pass an “Epee Qual” authorization at Pennsic.

Because Pennsic attracts rapier combatants from across the Known World, your
opponent in any given rapier activity may not be familiar with your rules or
customs. If, whenever possible, you take a moment to discuss such things as
blow calibration, weapons standards and wound conventions with fencers you
do not know, you may be able to avoid misunderstandings later.

If you DO encounter problems or conflicts, you should notify the Midrealm
Duty Marshal (the one in the baldric) as soon as you can. Either he or she
will be able to help you or they can tell you where you can get help. If
you should need my assistence but cannot locate me on site, my Drop Dead
Deputy is Herr Maximilan der Zauberer. He should be able to answer any
question you may have. Scheduling concerns may be addressed to Her
Excellency, Baroness Brighid the Ageless.

All rapier participants are asked to remain flexible, adaptable and
forgiving of the mistakes of others . . . so that we may all enjoy Pennsic
War together.

Please note: the Rapier Combat Schedule was completed several MONTHS ago in
order to meet a publication deadline. Changes and additions to the schedule
will be posted in the tent on the Rapier Field, as will any fencing-related
announcements.

Sed ludus solum est.

John Inchingham
