ANST - Suggestions for Gulf War

Xene here again,

As we have been getting ready for the war, Llywelyn and I have these
thoughts to add:

Clean out your refrigerator. You don't want to come home and find new life
forms (or old life forms) greeting you at your front door.

Take out the trash, especially after you clean out your refrigerator.

Stop your mail, stop your newpaper, and let a relative know the website
address for Gulf War in case of an emergency. Some people even turn off
their water so they won't have any wet surprises from burst washing machine
hoses.

Leave your house as clean as you can - fresh sheets on the bed, clean
counters, etc. After you get home, you won't want to do a darn thing for at
least a week. When you get back, your house will suffer from what we call
"SCA Barf". That's where your car barfs into your living room all the
camping stuff and dirty clothes from the event.

Find out who in your group *isn't* going and barter/ask them/pay them to
check on your house while you are gone - Give them a key. It never hurts to
have them come by at odd hours and turn the lights on or off.

Pay your bills before you go to war. Reconcile your checkbook and set your
spending budget.

Take a camera.

Anyone else have ideas?

Xene

Xene here:

Have a spare set of mundane clothing (socks, underwear, etc.) and shoes in
your car. You will thank me later.

Don't get stupid drunk. It's easy to get lost at night time, even when you
are sober. Broken ground travel in the dark when you are intoxicated is
hazardous to your knees and ankles. Your orthopedic surgeon will thank me
later if you don't remember this.

Drink lots of water. Eat vegies, fruit, and high fiber foods. Tourney block
(severe constipation) is really painful after a week.

Wash your hands with soap and water. It prevents illness.

Use sunscreen in the morning.

In Service,
Xene

Hello!

I'm thinking of putting up something of a FAQ list for newish SCA
members who are attending Gulf War for the first time. Locally, also, I
volunteered to run a "first time to War" get-together/class for our
newer folks on the same subject. So...this leaves me here trying to
remember what it was like goign to war for the first time. I have
some ideas...but would like to hear from others (particularly those
newer) about what folks should know their first time to war.

Things that I've thought a little about:
Pack in plastic
Mealplans available on site. Or, try to coordinate food with
friends/group.
You are going to walk long distances.
You're goign to camp really near to other folks.
It's going to rain.
Merchant row is wonderful and Midnight madness is cool.
Don't buy a pup-tent for war (or general SCA) use.
Folks from other kingdoms have different fighting customs/rules. Don't
be snitty about it.
It'll be from the teens to the 80's out. Be prepared for anything,
temperature-wise.
Try to bring enough garments that you don't have to repeat, much....
