Well, I had not intended to have my bare ear snug up against the bare
metal.

I certainly do not want to damage the helm in any way, but I am a bit
hard of hearing and I sometimes have a hard time making out orders
from my commander or from the marshals with the helm as it is.

I used this method on my rapier helm (which is a similar design but of
lighter metal) and I have not noticed any problem. But, of course, no
one hits me in the side of the head with a big stick while I am
wearing that one.

Perhaps instead of the circle I could just use a cross of 5 holes
vertical and 5 holes horizontal (for a total of 9, since the center
hole is the same for both lines) drilled 1/2 inch apart. That may not
seem like much, but it makes a big difference in how well you can hear
in there.
