[Ansteorra] Persona/new people

Tump Laird tlaird at satx.rr.com

Just got back from viking, and I sure do love my new sword. Thanks for the
story Mari. When one gets involved in holding office, event planning/prep,
and all the other stressful things the SCA can bring, the simple pleasures
can be forgotten.

For the new people, persona playing is just that simple. If you have been
to an event, you have probably done it already, and just don't know it. My
second event I went to Yule. I planned a day trip just to get my new helm
looked at by the Earl Marshal. Since for me at that time it was all about
the fighting, and this was not a fighting event, I had no interest in
staying. Then all the Knights that were there sat in a circle, and one by
one told what they thought was the most important quality of a Knight. I
was impressed by this and decided to stay for feast. I had on my peasant
outfit (torn up sweatshirt and dirty pants) and a cloak that I swear was
made as a Halloween Count Dracula costume. I was sitting there when a lord
I had not meet came up to me and said "I really like your helm, and don't
take this wrong, but what you really need is a tunic." He then handed me a
fine red tunic with gold Celtic trim. I could barely say thank you. Then
one of the old crusty Vikings (can't remember which one) said you know what
you have to do now don't you? Even though you just a stupid Dane, ( sound's
like Ivar, now that think about it) in the true Norse tradition, you have to
gift him back. Not now, next week, but sometime. This lord was not from my
barony. I did not want him to get away, so I gave him the only thing I had
brought with me, a chain mail coif that I had made. The rings did not cost
me that much, and I had made it just for practice. He freaked out, started
going all over the hall, showing everybody from the Crown on down. I
thought the gift of the tunic to me was more special. He did not know me,
and I really did need a tunic. After a while my Barron came over to me and
said that as he had said in the circle, generosity was the most important
quality to him, as since I had show that, he took a ring off his finger and
put it on mine. Now I am the one that is freaked out. I said to the people
at the table I was at that had nothing else to give, when a lady I still do
not know said, "You have already given him something." I looked at her like
a chicken would watch a card trick. "You have given him the opportunity to
play out his persona. That is what is special to us." Three other people
gifted me that night. (I still owe two of them) I have been playing for
about a 18 months and can just barely find Demark on a map. most of my
limited knowledge comes from the History/Discovery channels. I still don't
have boots yet, but I want to get them in Sweden. It is difficult to stay
or play in persona all day, but it is those little things, like gifting
someone, or not knowing what chocolate is, that make this game special for
me. So find a mentor. Trade skills and things you have for things you
don't. If you fight heavy, try light. Go to a stained glass class. Hang out
with someone you don't know. Go camp crawling. Learn or make up a filk
song. Stand up at the fire, and then forget the words. Experience the true
joy of having a Bard-fart. Remember, it's just a game. And if somebody
gives you a hard time, stare at them like you do not speak their language.
NEVER do anything you don't want to do. And most important...

HONOR ABOVE ALL, ABOVE ALL, HONOR

Botolf

P.S. On the gate/troll question, The lovely ladies in my barony that time
after time volunteer for the job I hate most prefer not to be called trolls.
I respect that.

Good Stefan, who said it was a typo?

And I'm not so sure about a difference in prizes. Are they not both seeking
to
improve their position among the nobility?

Personally, I find that walking 'authentically' means adjusting myself to
the footwear. The complaints I've heard about "period shoes" tend to be
based on the fact that the wearer won't or can't adjust to the demands of
the footwear, and so they wind up fighting their shoes and their feet hurt.

Plain medieval shoes are much like walking barefoot. Most modern people ar=
e
used to not only having a slightly raised heel (which messes with the
internal muscles of the shoe, causing some to develop that wouldn't, and
others to atrophy), but also having padding and protection. If you will
watch people walking, A lot of them tend to slam their heels into the
ground. They also don't watch where they are walking. Someone walking
barefoot is more likely to -place- their heel on the ground, and step aroun=
d
things like sharp glass and rocks.

Walking in long toed shoes adds a certain twist to it since you have to ste=
p
up high enough to clear the toe. Or else you waddle like a penguin.

Using pattens and additional outer soles help emulate the more modern
thoughlessness about how we walk, but are not always the perfect answer
either (actually a lot of people shuffle in pattens, rather than -walking-
-- personally I don't wear them, they drive me nuts).

Greetings,

Please pardon the bandwidth, but I'm trying to locate a
certain gentleman on this list. We spoke at a party during Gulf
Wars (Thursday night) and he mentioned that there will be a
picture of me in armour, toting my spear, on his webpage. I was
one of the 4 "Trimarian party-crashing redheads"... wore a black
cotehartie with red decorative undersleeves. If this rings a
bell, please contact me privately.

Merci,
Lady Colete

Reply-To: ansteorra at ansteorra.org

Greetings unto Ansteorra!

Here again with a reminder that pre-registration for Pennsic must be in by
June 1st. Without your pre-registeration Ansteorra gets less land and you
get less space for your camps.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFO: Please contact Sir Wilhelm at stasya at msn.com regarding
your registration and which group you will be camping with in Ansteorra.

As mentioned before this years registration is just a click of the mouse.
Go
to Click here: PENNSIC WAR 31
INFORMATION PAGE. Under Pennsic Departments Announcements click on
"pre-registration" and then "pre-registration on line." If you are camping
with Ansteorra then under "Group Camping with" you must type in "Kingdom of
Ansteorra" to be registered for Ansteorra.

For those of you who do not have the ability to pre-register on line -- I
will once again be carrying pre-registration forms to Spring Fair,
Bordermarch Baronial, and Steppes Warlord. If you are mailing this form on
your own -- please remember to write in "Kingdom of Ansteorra" for your
group.

Furthermore, I am still looking for someone to do land grab this year since
I
am unable to perform this duty. Please contact me if you are able to arrive
at Pennsic by August 2nd. Additionally if you have any questions please
feel
free to contact me.

Learning to serve the dream,

Countess KayLeigh, WSA
