This a subject I can relate to since I am one of the "older" people at events.
You are correct about us not staying on site in the evenings and at night.
I can give you my reasons which maybe different from other people's; I have
a lot of trouble seeing to walk around at night sometimes even on pavement.
I can't tell the difference between a dark blotch on the ground and a hole. It
really doesn't matter until you step on it expecting one and getting the other.
A light bright enough for me to see by would be an extreme compared to the
lights around the sites and very invasive to everyone else.

As far as camping is concerned, I really would love to but am not able to setup
a camp as it should be and I cannot sleep without elevation anymore. In other
words, I am to old to be able to do those things. Let me change that; I am
not to
"old" to do that, I am not physically able to do it. Age has nothing to do
with it.

I realize there are two different kinds of "older" people in the SCA and I
am only
an example of one of them. Maybe some of the other people that are 25 years
younger than I am but have been playing much more than 10 years, will answer
the other aspect of your question.
