I agree with one of the reasons, small children. The other reason for me is being 27 years old and having a bad shoulder for the last 7 years from a car accident. Going to IceAxe was fun til trying to sleep on the ground in the cold, Friday night. Even my polar bear husband couldn't keep me warm enough. After feast Saturday night, we packed and left, much to my sadness but Mother Nature had a big part in chasing me out of the past. Even the young like to sleep in a warm bed. Next time will be packing a tent heater for IceAxe.

I guess I could be considered an old-timer, so I'll put in my tuppence
  worth.

It is possible to bring quite small children to events, and camping events.
Planning is the key (isn't it always? <G>) Pets are a little more difficult,
with many events publishing "No pets" on the event announcements.

I haven't wanted to sleep on the ground in quite a while. Tivar and I went
to a Real Bed at TFYC and haven't looked back since. It makes a real
difference. But then, we're willing to have a van and, at need, a trailer to
bring everything we need for comfort and children.

Someone else (Luciano?) mentioned sponsorship of others. I like this idea.
We have "sponsored" a number of people over the years, though not formally,
and it seems to work pretty well.

One reason folks have tended to pack up and leave Saturday evening is that
there's nothing to stay for on Sundays. Sundays in the Old Days (<G>) were
for pick-up fights, socializing, and other not-so-structured things when
events were less plentiful and there were people there you hadn't seen in
six months. Perhaps some of the event's activities could be planned for
  Sunday as well as Saturday.
