That's because Julie Andrews was not well-known at the time, and the moguls
were afraid going with an unknown (who could sing) was not as wise as going
with a star (who could not).  "Mary Poppins" was Julie Andrews' movie debut.
And Marnie Nixon dubbed Audrey Hepburns' singing in "My Fair Lady."
