No, what they were saying was that you should have a membership to attend
"official" events.  Extrapolating to create hyperbole serves not purpose in
an intelligent discussion.  Besides, you already have to have a membership
to be an Officer or a "Sitting Hat".  Peoples awards in any organization do
not go away because they are no longer members.  Usually there are merely
inactive until their memberships are paid.
