I was in 19 years before I got an award. For some of us, the dubii just
aren't important - the comradeship, the ability to learn new things, the
ability to teach others to do new things, the ability to share time and
knowledge and munchies with others, the ability to live a life about which
others only read in dusty tomes, is what it's about. Frankly, the awards
are completely beside the point for me. Whether I have one, or seven, or
none at all, is never going to affect my enjoyment of nor participation in
the SCA. I've had people tell me this is a weird perspective. <shrug>

And since you asked about gifts, I will say that I wear several on a
regular basis even when I forget to put on my Order medallion. Why?
Because the bead, enamelled ring, amber-set ring, slate, and other items
mean a LOT more to me than any award. These were given specifically TO ME,
and specifically as a thank-you or compliment from the giver(s). Nobody
else has one! And each one has a good memory for me of a time I was doing
something with others, and made someone happy, or increased their enjoyment
of the SCA.
