To my knowledge it actually began as a cravat- a scarf.

But did you learn to tie the tie from looking only at pictures
of the finished tie? Or one showing the various stages? The
staturary only gives the finished appearance.

If you figured out and learned to tie a tie from just the
finished picture, I am quite impressed.
