I first heard of the Society through a friend - Ly. Emerald Diddiki. She was
telling me about a wonderful new group that she had joined that recreated the
middle ages and I was more than intrigued. I went to my first fighter
practice that next weekend and have been going strong ever since. That was
in 1986. I was still living at home and had to convince my parents that it
was not some cult or such. This may sound a bit wicked, but right before the
first event I ever went to, I took a couple of friends from the SCA and we
went to the hospital where my mother had just gotten out of open heart
surgery the week before. I introduced them and we chatted for a while. I
don't really know if i conciously waited until my mother hit the morphene
button for the pain killer or not, but I asked her if I could go to Dallas
for the weekend for the event. She said yes (imagine that!) and the rest is
history. They never have worried about me when I am doing SCA stuff and knew
several of my fellow SCAer's.
Why I stay? I (like many) have found a wonderful family in the SCA. Sure,
there are people that you normally wouldn't associate with outside the club
if you met them on the street, but once you get to know them, they are truly
wonderful people. The first group of people I met in Seawinds, I consider my
lifelong friends. Some I still see on an almost daily basis, some have moved
away -- but they are my family now. The SCA brings people from all walks of
life. When I first joined, we were mostly a bunch of college kids, now we
are the "adults" and there is a nice mix of every age group in Seawinds. I
look back and am amazed! I also have gotten the chance to get to know my
lovely wife (who joined because of me). Most importantly, the SCA has given
me a chance that I would, more than likely never have. I have been given the
chance to find that I could do so much more and find more talent in myself
that I never would have realized. The Society has helped make me a confident
individual, something I wasn't before finding the club.
I could reminice all day............ :)
