Greetings friends.

I have been toying with the idea of making a new tent. Along those lines, I
think that I have found a potential source for some really cheap canvas.

Before I get my hopes up and organize a purchase for myself and others, I
would like to know if anyone else has had dealings with this company in the
past.

It is Magna Fabrics in New Jersey. Their web site is at
http://www.magnafabrics.com.

Thanks for any information.

If my memory serves correctly,
Best overall - HL Orianna della Francesca for her illuminated miniatures
Best new artform - HL Juliana de Vertue for a blown glass vessel
Best novice - a lovely lady named Emer for her Viking woman's clothing.

My apologies for mangling the spelling of names.

Reply-To: ansteorra at ansteorra.org

Oyez, Oyez, Oyez.

Pray take heed one and all. This weekend will see the return of a most
wondrous and glorious event. This weekend the Barony of Northkeep will hos=
t
Castellan XII. Come join us as we see who will become our next Baronial
Castellan. Castellan is an unusual event in that one must be proficient in
both martial and non-martial activities to claim the Castellan title.
We will have a very full day of fighting, bardic, archery, thrown weapons,
A&S, and a sumptuous feast to top it all off. Come compete in the
competitions for the individual titles and also come and compete in multipl=

with bardic by the fires, dancing to the drums, or gamble the night away
betting on the rapier fights sponsored by the Raptor.
A tavern will be available for breakfast and lunch on Saturday. There will
be many activities for youths also; with competitions to include a quest,
physical prowess, thrown weapons (foam axes), archery, bardic and A&S. The
children's competition will be divided into two age groups 5-12 and 13-17
years of age. So young people, come and have fun and shoot at a real live
target for the archery competition.

Here is a schedule of some of the planned events for the weekend:
Site opens 4:00 Friday
Saturday
8:30 Armor inspection starts
9:30 Heavy tournament starts.
10:00 Bardic competition starts
10:30 A&S opens in Main Hall

2:00 Thrown weapons starts
4:00 Tally of Bardic tokens to determine finalists
5:30 Bardic Finals
Torchlight Rapier Tournament hosted by the Raptor after court

The satire is even more delectable when you realize that illustration is ba=
sed on the photograph of Schliemann's wife wearing the alleged "Gold of Hel=
en of Troy", but with the said bathroom implements in place of the jewelry.=
"Motel of the Mysteries" should be on every archaeologist's, historian's =
or independent scholar's bookshelf. Aside from being a (mostly) still time=
ly satire of both American life and the (hopefully lessening) propensity of=
archaeologists to assign religious meaning to artifacts, it's an entertain=
ing and easily digested study in critical thinking -- in a Goofus v Gallant=
 sort of way. ;-)

That was actually an excerpt from _Motel of the Mysteries_, a splendid work
of satire by David Macaulay, the same fellow who gave us Castle, City, The
Way Things Work, and Great Moments in Architecture (another satire).

The premise was that in the late 1970s, North America was buried under tons
of something called "Free Offer - Act Immediately". Centuries later,
archaeologists began excavating a sleazy motel, which they believed was the
burial site of an important god-king. The book is filled with line drawing=
s
and misinterpretations of the artifacts unearthed.

The picture of the lead archaeologists wife, wearing a "Sanitized for Your
Protection" strip as a headband with toothbrushes as earrings is worth the
price along.

Reply-To: ansteorra at ansteorra.org

Greetings,

I must say that I had a marvelous time at Steppes
Warlord this past weekend. But I am bit confused.
What with all the "pirates" and other things that
happened, I know I must have heard this wrong.

But, I heard that His Excellency Armand, Baron
Bordermarch, was gifted after Sunday evening's court
at Steppes with a new throne. I believe it was big,
blue, "reuseable" and complete with enough paper to
start a scribal (or is that scribble) guild. :) But
then, I wasn't there to witness said gifting.

So, Your Excelency, is it true? Or am I just suffering
from prolonged exposure again?

I just want to make sure. Because I'm not one to
repeat gossip, so I better get it straight the first
time.

Hugs,
Annais

Now I'm not one to gossip, but I heard through the grapevine too! Now, if t=
hat were me, I'd just be glad I'd have my own and wouldn't have to share. S=
econd, papers expensive and the monks are greedy with the blends (longer la=
sting and tougher than Bounty). :)

Did I mention that 2000 Flushes wouldn't stain the already beautiful blue f=
inish of your throne?! And maybe if you talk to the pirates, they may retur=
n the tidy-bowl man. ;)

Another perk would be all the PVC piping makes excellent scabards for your =
rapier weapons. Just make sure you seal them so they don't erode. Did I me=
ntion indoor plumbing?

Meetings could also be conducted in an efficient manner despite the long wa=
its. It could also be unravelled and used to protect your things on externa=

Look, think of it as Christmas in May, and you won't have to return it like=

With sincerest congratulations,

I worked as a tent maker for a couple of years. Both companies used the same
supplier: Astrup. I strongly recommend using a marine boat shrunk canvas
like
Sunforger. Astrup's website is : http://www.astrup.com/

They are pretty good folks to work with, and most are quite knowledgeable.
For a
Medieval pavilion, I'd avoid most of their Tent and Shelter Fabric, as they
are
not really meant for the game that we play...

If you don't have a good, strong industrial sewing machine, you might see
about
renting one. You can REALLY trash a home unit with just a part of a
pavilion...

For those who like "Motel of the Mysteries", I highly recommend Horace
Miner's excellent essay, "Body Ritual Among the Nacirema". It was written
in 1956, but is still required reading for anthropology students today. YOu
can find it online at:

You heard correctly, Centurian Erasmus was indeed asked to contemplate
whether he'd join the ranks of Chivalry. He'll make his decision and take
the belt or baldric at Coronation, if I remember correctly.
