Xene here:

Working with Crowns and other nobles has helped prepare me for dealing with
administrators. I've actually *had* tea with the Queen!.

The study of Byzantine history helped me have a wonderful conversation with
the Vice-President of my husband's company at our first Christmas office
party. He had just finished reading the trilogy "Byzantium" by John Julius
Norwich.

Being able to pronounce Russian names really helped when I was doing payroll
for a Russian Tea House. (Thank you, Sir Galen along with all the field and
court heralds I know!.)

Learning so many different names for my friends has taught me how to
remember my student's names.
(Let's see now....James, Moonshadow, Mikhail, Savien, Dore'....what is it
this week?)

What goes around, comes around. The person you help today may be the person
who saves your life tomorrow. If not them, then someone else will be there
when you need it most.

If you do have a complaint about someone, take it to them first. The
individual that you might choose to complain to could be that person's
relative (or squire brother, or Laurel, etc.).

Always check (and re-check) who your e-mail is being sent to. If you are
really upset about something, write your letter, save it and then look at it
again the next day. Use Spellcheck:)

Service should be done with joy, not as a begrudging chore. There is
nobility in every action of service, even washing dishes or peeling turnips.

What have you learned in the SCA that has helped you in the "real" world?

In Service,

Xene Theriane, OL, OP, etc....
