On the Subject of Mentoring, the Steppes has, or at least had, a list of
experienced event Stewards listed in the back of our local publication.
Those who volunteered to be on the list were from a wide variety of skill
sets and styles. An individual who wanted to or was thinking of becoming a
mentor could choose someone from the list or someone they know in the group
could point them in their direction. I would not really call it a guild
Also, here in the Steppes, We have chosen to always have an Event Steward
and a Deputy Event Steward in case something happens to the Event Steward.
It also makes it possible for the Event Steward to take a break while the
Deputy takes over for a while. The Deputy can be new to the process of being
an Event Steward and thereby be learning or they may have more drive and be
the Event Steward themselves with the deputy being someone of similar or
greater experience. In the case where both are new to stewarding, they are
gently directed to chose a mentor who will help them where needed, but allow
them to learn about the process and do the work themselves. The Mentor is
also there in case the prospective Event Stewards are really not ready and a
firmer hand needs to be taken in order to make sure the event is still a
success. It is a delicate position that requires knowledge skill and
diplomacy as well as the willingness to be the Event Steward in a worst case
Sorry for being sententious and long-winded. I hope this has been helpful.
