This is aimed at The Company of the Grail and other groups who want a more period look. If you are not interrested in long wood working joinery, hit delete now or forward to someone who is<g>.

This weekend I designed an 8 foot and 16 foot long reviewing stand. Both are about 7 foot deep and sit 2 feet off the ground, have a solid roof and use no metal hardware.

They do use pegs for a few parts.

It is a lot of wood, since it has a solid floor, so there are a lot of joists for the floor and since I used a solid roof, joists for it as well. If you used a canvas roof, that would reduce some of the weight.

Without having the picture here to scan, I will describe some of the joinery to make it work. I will be describing the 8 foot long one.

There are 2 8' 4x4's, 2 10' 4x4's and and 4 5' 4x4's. Top of the first hole will be at 2' and go down the length of a 2x6 and centered on the pole for the width of the 2x6. This will be done in all 8 boards. The main floor joists will be 3 8' 2x6's and will go from front to back sliding through the holes in the 4x4's. The left and right side will consist of an 8', 5', and 10' 4x4. The center will have only two 5' 4x4's on it, as it only supports the hand rail.

Now on to the 8' 2x6's. The thickness of a 2x6 from the end of the 2x6 cut a notch the width and half the depth of a 2x6. Then measure form the inner edge of the notch in 3 inches. Centered on the long sided of the 2x6 make a hole like you would for putting wedges in on a tresstle table. When the front and back 2x6 slide down into the notch, the wedge will push the 4x4 tight against the front and back
2x6 giving them greater strength.

I hope this makes sence on where it is going.

The front and back 2x6's will have notches to hold the inner floor joists made from 2x4's. Make sure that the center 5' 4x4's have a 2x4 tightly on each side of them. That way when you lay the floor inplace the edges of the plywood will almost ontop of them. If you do not wish to use plywood for the floor, tongue and groove boards should run side to side instead of front to back and will be even more solid.

Rafters are done the same way.

plywood is tied to the joists with some solid hemp rope since nails are not being used. A small hole throught each sheet and the joist will make for a very solid fit.

Well, that is all the detail I wish to go into now. If any of you build one, take pictures. I would love to see it.

There are other things to reduce wabble that can be done through good joinery as well. X bracing your front and back rail will do a lot of that for you.

When I finish the written plans I will put them on my website, but do not hold your breath<g>. If you want more details, please let me know.

your servant,
mahee

I love to design things<g>
