i've seen similar mail face guards .. but mainly on norse, middle eastern, and oriental helms.  if the weave is right, you can see out through it fine.  always thought a layer of welded mail set under a fighting helms bars (attached to it by links) would make a excellent combat arrow guard for the eye's/face
