[Ansteorra] Thatch Roofing

Dave Jordan wulfgar at hot.rr.com
Fri Jun 6 15:48:30 PDT 2003

Please be very careful in using any type of 'thatch' in the central and
south Texas area - by definition, thatch is HIGHLY FLAMMABLE, and could
be a 'flash' fire. Thatch originated in a much cooler and very much
wetter environment. This material when damp would smolder, but not burn
readily; in our environment, with high heat, minimal humidity and gusty
winds, it would be VERY dangerous!

vr,

Wulfgar at hot.rr.com

I've seen a lot of folks use those carport tents and modify them for use
in the SCA. Big Lots has some now for $99. Don't know if same quality
as what others have been getting, but its probably less expensive. Check
it out, Hillary

Those are usually good tents to get for events. Afriend of mine in
Barony Atenveldy uses one, and if I remember correctly, you just need to
make doors, or a door for one side.

Unfortunately, the roof line is not at all like a period tent or
pavilion, but they do seem to be sturdy and easily erected. The "cloth"
often looks synthetic and not like canvas, but that can be replaced or
possibly painted.

I would love to have an article for the Florilegium on making these
carport tents more presentable for SCA events. I think a lot of folks
might find it useful.

When our canvas pavilion finally gets to decrepit, I am considering
going to one of these carport tents, but probably redone as a hut or
other medieval building instead of trying to make it appear to be a
period pavilion. Anyone know how to make a passable thatch roof, that is
also transportable and preferably fireproof or resistant? While an
article would be nicest, a series of messages on this subject might also
be appropriate for the Florilegium. :-)

I have thought about using raffia from the craft stores. It looks like
it will shed water and also looks a whole lot like straw. The roof would
still be soft and could be folded or rolled. The raffia would have to be
sewn on cloth used as a decorative cover for the true roof.

I have not yet tested this idea.

Thanks for the idea Ciard, but I'm not sure what this raffia is. Is it
fluffy or bushy? I've considered reed mats, but while they would roll
well, thatch isn't flat, so I'm not sure that would look appropriate.

Yes, I assumed that any kind of reed or brush covering would just be a
disguise for the real roof underneath. With these garage tents, I would
assume you would just leave the regular plasticized material in place. I
have wondered if some kind of paint or coloring might keep the normal
bright white plastic from showing through the "thatch". That might also
allow the "thatch" to be made thinner.

Those of you who have painted these tents, (anyone from the House of
Bricks out there), what type paint did you use to paint them. Some
paints might not stick well to the plastic cloth.

In a few illuminations there are tents that look like our garages. They
are= few, but they do exist. One has added small circle tents to each
corner li= ke towers, but they could not be more than 3ft diameter, just
big enough to= hide a port-o-john in or a shower. But the shape does
exist in period.

We didn't paint the plastic canvas walls, for that very reason. We made
all-new walls out of fabric and painted them with latex paints. When we
set up our house for camping (Gulf Wars, for example), we put the
plastic walls inside the painted walls for added insulation (air space:
the pipe legs are "sandwiched" between the two walls), as well as to
water-proof the living quarters - painting fabric makes it resistant to
light rain and wind, but it still wicks LOTS of water through. For "day
pavillion" or List-side" pavillion use, we may only use one wall, or may
put two painted walls back-to-back for a more "finished" appearance. Of
course, all these "extra" walls DO add a lot of bulk, wight, and set-up
effort to the pavillion. That's why we haven't (yet?) created a roof
cover for ours, although we have discussed it occasionally. Mostly, we
rely on making the "eye-level" details as good as we can, and trust that
most will not search upwards for flaws in appearance and detail. That's
why I even built a wooden door for the thing.

.
Ever in service,
Lord Marion de la Massue
House of Brick.

I really like the idea of using grass hula skirts as thatch roofs. I
believe the "good" costume hula skirts are possibly made from raffia.
It is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide, flat, dried, grass looking stuff, and
straw colored. Sorry I have not thoroughly checked out the details on
what raffia is made from, but it can be found at Hobby Lobby etc.

If it turned out to not be rain-friendly, the decorative cover could be
removed before bad weather, and would give a nice period appearance.
