Stefan,

They did not issue membership numbers until 1980.  I still have my old
cards and blackstars and numbers didn't show up until 1980.  As for how
they issued them, I have never really figured out what system was used.  I
know of people who were issued numbers lower than mine who joined after me
and would have come later in an alphabetic pattern and vis versa.
