I happen to think this is a very good idea. If you subtract $1 for the
prepaid feasts (so that people will have a reason to pay early, beside the
courtesy that they grant the group by making funds available) and make 1/4
of your total feast spots available at the gate, you should make enough
money to cover the cost of the feast and still allow people who can't make
pre-plans the opportunity to buy feast.
I know that when I plan a feast, for every 100 people I plan the break even
point at selling 75 or 80 of those spots. This allows room for the chance
that your feast will not sell out and you still don't lose your shirt. I
know that this would not work for every group, but if you are planning an
especially expensive menu, it could help to make sure you can pull it off.
