"The Republic" is Plato, right?  Course if what I remember from my Intro
to Philosophy class in college, Plato proposes that the benevolent
Dictator is the most ideal form of government.  Perhaps we should be
reading that :)

A small correction:  Instead of Machiavelli's "Republic" that should be
his
Discourses (particularly that of "Remodeling the Florentine Government")
which contains most of his material ON Republics.
