[Ansteorra] Newcomers

May I ask where we can purchase these newcomer books? I have been playing for a little over a year and was unaware of this book. I would like to purchase a couple of copies for our newcomer grab, get started box. So, prehaps our newcomer may read it and it will help them get a better start in the group.

SCA?""---

I will touch on this part since I have been involved with it for a long
time.

SCA Inc. does sell a handbook that does exactly what you are asking about.
However many newcomers do not know about it and therefore do not purchase
it.

In the Steppes about 7 years ago we had this come up so I sat down and
started something that did answer some of this for a newcomer not only to
the SCA but to the DFW area. I left just enough open so that their natural
curiosity would actually bring them forward and ask further questions of us.
The results can be viewed off the Steppes website. Shortly afterwards, it
was requested to be placed on the central regional site as well. Shortly
after that it received known world recognition and has been used as a
template by several groups. http://www.steppes.org/newcomers.html

I update the pages as often as I can when it comes to the links to make sure
they stay fresh. It is due one now.

A more recent change has been the Kingdom website when we did the overhaul
this past spring. In the top navigation on each page next to the word Regnum
I place in parenthesis the word Contacts because let's face it, who outside
our group knows what Regnum means. I also added a link labeled Newcomers
that goes to the Kingdom Hospitaler's site.

I have seen a website created independently by an sca'er called the Online
Demo that has some very interesting ideas and I would love to incorporate
some of that into our website. But the bottom line is what our newcomers
need is face time.

What I mean by face time is just that, face to face meet and greet, talking,
mentoring. Again, in the Steppes, over 7 years ago we started the hospitaler
deputy system. we started with 3 then moved up to 5. We are spread out
through the metroplex. We hook up new folks with members that live close to
them and they travel together to meetings, events, revels, and fighter
practices. We try to keep that face time at a max. We try to pick up the
slack when we are between Hospitalers as well. It is not an easy job for
just one person to do, in my opinion it really is not meant for just one
person but I understand the need for all those things to be in a central
place under the charge of one person. We deputies take on all the other
duties that would other wise spread our officer way too thin in an area as
large as ours.

Thanks for listening. I hope I have touched on part of one of your
questions. :)
