Subject:Pennsic GPS Mapping Project

The following involves severe electrical gadget geekiness, and my wife
and friends think I'm crazy for attempting this, so apologies in
advance.
Permission to forward granted.

Recently I acquired a GPS that could accept downloaded maps. (Garmin
GPS V) So, when driving, I can see almost exactly where I am relative
to city streets, query for directions to the nearest gas station, etc.

Searching the web, I uncovered various software packages that can be
used to make user-created maps and download them onto my GPS. And I know
that THL Geoffrey of Wroxeter did professional surveying of Pennsic. So,
putting two and two together, the plan was hatched....

What I'd like to do is make a downloadable map that will have, for
starters, all land blocks, roads, parking lots, and assorted points
of interest. (I.e. Royal encampments, Chirurgeons Point, A&S class
tents, battlefields, archery range, etc.) This could be useful as a
tool for newcomers to Pennsic, for people wanting to explore places
they haven't been before without worrying about getting lost, or
as an emergency backup when one has imbibed a bit too much mead and
can't figure out how to get home. ;-)

I'm looking for people who are interested in this project, to help
in several areas. I'd like to have a beta version available for
this Pennsic, but I can't make it this year, so people who could
walk around, check for accuracy, and give feedback would be useful.
I can also use help with the content, too, i.e. what things would be
useful to people and should be added to the map, etc. And I could
use help from people interested in making this compatible with GPS's
other than Garmin. So please email me if this project
interests you.

In service,

Ryan Mackenzie
