I passed the message onto another mailing list and here's a useful response:

Call your phone company right away! If you have the time they can pass
the number on to the FBI or whoever. In my area, doing *69 will say if the
number was available and if not, I hit *59 which logs it in the phone
company's security department. 5 calls from the same place and they can 
catch even
"untraceable" calls.
