[Ansteorra] Packing Then vs Now WAS Gas prices

Lady Elizabeth,

I know what you mean. When I started in '94, I used to be able to go eventing in my little Suzuki Swift...with two teenagers. Now, I require a pick up truck to haul all my "comforts" and NO teenagers!

I couldn't possibly get by now with my small tent, ice chest and a few bits of garb. Now it's a King Canopy, futon mattress and bed, rugs, linens, chairs, table, minimum 5 sets of garb, two ice chests, stove, lanterns, etc, etc, ad nauseum. And thats just for a nearby weekend event! I'm also going to be adding a portable shower to this mix as well as accoutrements to periodize my canopy. UGH! I forgot...the hoop skirt, too!

I've decided that it's mostly age that has me doing all of this. I'm too old and too large to sleep on the ground and have to roll onto the floor of the tent, on all fours, and THEN get up. Not to mention the decided lack of headroom when trying to put on a chemise, gown, bodice, do hair, etc. If I could afford it, I'd have a fancy schmancy $300K travel bus with all of the bells and whistles. *sigh* One day...I can keep hoping for the lottery to match my numbers. Of course, if THAT happens, I'm buying land in each Barony and building mini-castles! LOL

>Although gas prices do effect my far away eventing they do not effect my local participation. I am fortunate enough to live in a small shire that is in my small hometown. Fighter practice for the most part is not even a gallon of gas there and back for a month, and populace meetings are even closer. For those that this is a problem for may I suggest car pooling. It's not like you are going to an event and can fill a uhaul trailer with just your stuff, it's a few armor bags and a people. As for eventing I am thankful that my parents have a huge pickup and let me and my stuff ride with them. I have also learned to pack lighter because if I took all I wanted to take I could fill a uhaul by myself, and I hate packing it all up when I'm tired and hung over on Sunday. What is crazy is when I first started playing I had a pup tent, sleeping bag, ice chest, and a few pieces of garb; now no matter how much I bring, I've always forgotten something.
