if you like such things, try the Patrick O'Brian british naval series
(Master & Commnader) .. for the many words & sayings that come down to us
from british naval usage .. way more than you might think

also check out Neal Stephenson's "Baroque Cycle" for english (and other)
origins of words relating to commerce & money .. plus a great view of early
London and interesting origins of their politic's (among many diversions) ..
for example, why is a "quarter" two bits - because a piece of eight (the
core currency of that time) was divided into eight "bits" to be broken off
to make change ... ergo a quarter is two bits
