snip<<<<<P.S. One final question: How would having an event that was completely
medieval--the hall, the clothes, the food, the whole ambiance, "ruin"
things? I kind of thought that was the whole idea of the SCA.

I am not saying that it would ruin the ambience of the event...but you also have to remember 2 things...and this is where the " authenticity mavens" ruin things for everyone.

1) Not everyone...especially the newcomer's to the society, can be perfect in their garb etc...either due to lack of knowledge in the beginning, or lack of finances...or recources.

and most of all 2) Unless you are willing to go out and build the hall the way things were done in period...deal with food spoilage ( no refrigeration remember) , not being able to cook on gas or electric stoves ( they didn't have them), weave all the tapestries and make all oof the other hall decor by hand ( ambience) and grow, spin, weave, aye and sew by hand, and cqrve buttons etc, tan the leather for your shoes...and all of the other stuff that had to be done....remember it is not truly period .

There are many things in the SCA which are 'tradition" and should be allowed to remain as such...troll, autocrat etc were used from the beginning. Maybe not here in Ansteorra...but in the West and Caid where things started and where most of the original members still reside.

In the Barony of Altavia ( which is the original Barony in Caid...and where several of the first members of the society, including Baron Robairre Du Bois, still reside) they hold an annual "Oldtimer's Tourney" where they still drag out the carpet armor and day shades...or use trees as opposed to the newer and fancier pavillions.

As someone stated in an earlier post ( sorry this has gone on for a while now and I forget who it was) many of us " Oldtimer's "( going on 30 years myself next year) know that Troll is where they take our money ( or we take someone elses)..the Autocrat or Feastocrat are who you contact for information or if there is a problem...etc.

This is supposed to be for fun, and yet, as the years have gone on I find many people are getting bogged down, by the authenticity bit. I know for a fact that in other re-enactment groups this causes a lot if disention and disatifaction ( look at the cival war groups) and causes the groups to lose members.

I am not trying to cause any arguments, just trying to remind people that this is a game...as it state in the Crown of Caid >>>You Rule Because They Believe. And also remember the byline please...IN Service to The Dream
