"The mob-mind can be a frightening and vicious thing, and good people can be
destroyed by the malicious tongues of others, and stories often grow in the
telling."
I came home from 10 days of vacation and saw this thread, kinda a shocking
title to open and find in a mailbox when lulled by too much turkey ;)
One thing to all the wisdom written in all these responses I wanted to add
is well reflected in the above quote.
If you hear something about someone, consider the source. In all my years
in the SCA I have found that often those being slandered are dynamic,
caring, fun people who make good friends. Some people fear change or fear
what is new and different and strike out through gossip and aggressive
slander to cripple a public or very energetic figure before they can gather
a tide of enthusiasm around them.
This can be another brass hat, a newcomer, an officer, anyone can be on the
receiving end.
Sadly, this cripples not just those who would bring new dimension, depth
and fun to our community and game, but cripples the community and stagnates
it, causing it to dwindle.
Over time I have learned to seek out the subjects of such slander and
gossip, and talk to them. Get to know them for myself before buying into
the drama. The greatest treasures are often the hardest to seek and find.
If someone goes to that much trouble to bury someone's reputation or
something another person has created or are trying to champion, it may be
that the teller of tales is hiding a great treasure that you may come to
love.
Seeking out that treasure can be a great adventure, and in the process you
may make a new friend that enriches your dream.
