Neck chains are not given to squires in all kingdoms and I thought that the 
spurs went only to a knight.

Not all knights wear spurs, either. My lord was knighted before spurs were 
given to Ansteorran knights. He has never worn spurs, but he does wear his 
white belt and gold chain.

Very true. And a red belt alone is not indicative of a squire. There are a
neck chain and spurs to complete the insignia set. Same for a knight with a
white belt.

Without the chain and spurs they are just colored bits of leather to
coordinate with your outfits.
