It isn't all that unusual to see folks running around in spurs.  All you 
have to do is visit the equestrian field in order to watch them in use.  
It's not pretentious or assuming.  It is, however, sometimes part of riding 
a horse...and it's difficult to remember to take them off when you dismount.
