[Ansteorra] Merchant - Laurel

Because there have been times and Kingdoms and Crowns and Laurels Circles
who have said that no Merchant would become a Laurel...

We've had those incidents in our Kingdom...

Very often the crux of that is...that to be a successful merchant, especially in the past when fewer people were willing to pay for period stuff...you had to cater to the majority of people's taste...which was SCAesque...and so the amount you had to put out to make a living...vs the amount of period stuff you put in A&S played on people's perceptions.

Some people may still have that opinion...but on the whole...our Kingdom has evolved beyond that.

Remember...that most people don't keep track of what is current culture especially if it is not in their area of interest...so they go on what they've
heard which may be 10 to 15 years old and gone through just as many
rumour cycles...

members with a learned skill when someone does it for the love of
said skill. It is the propagation of the skill that we value. It is
the display on themselves and others that we the populace have see
these skilled members get rewarded the most for.

I would like to ask a question in addition to that as it has puzzled
me every since I joined and heard someone say it out loud while we
were all in court.

Why is it believed that if you merchant your craft you will never
see a peerage?

Great questions!
