I don't have kids of my own, but I became a fan of kid leashes after working at a bookstore in Austin back in the mid '80's.  Somebody tried to nab a woman's kid right there in the store.  Fortunately she had a leash on the child, so the kidnapper dropped him and ran when he realized the kid was directly attached to the mother.  She told us that was the second time it had happened - apparently she'd been through a messy divorce with the father wanting custody.
