     The way I learned it Nord as das Strom was supposed to be Norse for
North of the storm, a reference to our being north of Namron.  It was latter
found that the correct translation would be "Nordlicher Strom", (almost
certainly misspelled),  Nobody much cared for being Nordlichers so it was
changed.
