One of the joys of the SCA is that each of us *can* answer this question
for our own selves, and in our own way(s).

Personal example: my "full" LBPS (long boring persona story) can easily
run to more than four hours, and includes everything from massacre of
the home village to a VERY long nap in northern Nuevo Mexico ... and can
slide in as much late 1500s real-world Mediterrenia / Pan-Arabia / New
Spain as I can manage to research. I have done so now and then, but not
on any formal basis. (Gives me better leeway in the telling of the tale
if the names are conveniently forgotten in favor of positions / ranks /
titles...)

Now, when it comes to tales from the CURRENT Middle Ages, I try my best
to name those whose names deserve to be remembered. (For those who
should not be, for one reason or another, I am very likely to use the
same mechanisms as I use for the long, long, departed.)
