[Ansteorra] Telling someone that what they are doing is not period

I can share an example of how this can be done
extremely well, from recent experience, by our own Don
Maelgwyn Dda. Don Maelgwyn firmly believes that
making armor using period materials and techniques is
no more difficult or expensive than most of our modern
'equivalents'. He has been strongly encouraging local
fighters to explore period solutions to armoring
problems. The key is that he has never, to my
knowledge, addressed anyone with the approach that
what they are doing is wrong, he simply shows his
enthusiasm for what he himself is doing, and informs
his listeners of the benefits of following the
examples of those we are imitating. His message would
be far less palatable if he had approached me with a
critique of my own armor (I would be a pretty good
poster child for non period practice covered by a
tabard). Instead he has caused me, and others, to be
interested in doing the next armor kit with period
techniques. If this approach can be effective with
fighters (who may be a bit more concerned with
'practicality' than 'periodicity'), I suspect that it
cannot be less so when addressed toward those who
prioritize the arts and sciences. As a herald, who
tries to guide others toward period practice in my own
niche, I try to remember Don Maelgwyn's example when I
must 'break the bad news' to a submitter.
