[Ansteorra] period on a budget

One thing we do is when our household buys cloth for our own garb, we tend
to buy an extra yard or two to make garb for newbies we're helping get
started. As for buying cloth on your own, watch Wal-Mart and cloth stores
for sales on cloth. I know our local Wal-Mart has a $1 and $2 racks for
cloth. Period fabrics tend to be more expensive than synthetics, but you
can watch for synthetics that "look" period. I will admit that silk and
cotton tend to breathe much better than synthetics, especially in our
Ansteorran heat, but they're not always affordable. Broadcloth is a common
choice for first garb, and I continue to use it for garb that is not as
commonly seen. (underdresses and such) If you are able to purchase cotton
or silk (catching it on sale) it does tend to stand up to wear and tear
better, but it's not necessary.

As for the period police.... I love the comment I saw recently where a good
lady informed the ones complaining about her garb that obviously she didn't
know what she was doing and if they had such a problem with her garb, that
person could make them period appropriate garb and she would be delighted to
wear the clothing they made her exclusively. Unfortunately, you're going to
run across period police, and to be honest, I seriously doubt that they are
as period as they want you to be.
