If you want to research what they might have worn, try looking for art
dealing with the "fountain of youth" theme.  I know there's several
versions of it from German artists of the 15th/16th centuries, showing
women with a smock/chemise and that's all, while the men all have
braes.

Also check for art dealing with saints and their martyrdom, in
particular, st Sebastian, the one shot full of arrows, usually
pictured in his undergarments.
