Okay, it's just post period but 1607, Madonna del Rosario, CARAVAGGIO shows
a toddler in a very droopy diaper under split hose.

Lovely painting but, I am not so sure that you are looking at a droopy
diaper here.  Wouldn't this more likely be the child's long shirt,
underneath his jacket, rapped around and showing out of his split hose?
