A lot of floors were either dirt or covered with 'rushes'.  No where as
hard to clean up as wall-to-wall carpeting or finely finished wood
floors.  Even if you had stone beneath it, the floor is still easy to
clean.  This makes me wonder if the 'nursery' was a way of confining the
problem to a smaller area.  Like keeping the puppy in the laundry room.
