My kids saw the Elfsea fighter practice in a park and dragged my wife to
watch. They got hooked. After the divorce, she stopped going so I took over.
Eventually, the kids got tired of it since they could not fight, but I was
hooked for the long term.

Why not keep it to the list? I discovered the SCA through a practice at a
park in Northkeep. I was in a Melee group and saw someone doing something
similar so I went to investigate.... bitten by the bug and been an SCAer
since. That was 1991
