FIBER CONFERENCE AND EVENTS IN HOUSTON

On April 27-29, the Contemporary Handweavers of Houston guild will host
a statewide conference at the Omni Hotel Westside (I-10 and Eldridge).
The conference program includes workshops and seminars on a wide range
of topics: from color and design, to painting and printing of cloth and
yarns, 3-D shibori, spinning and dyeing for weavers and knitters, off
loom bead weaving, silk fusion, needle felting, nuno felting, gelatin
printing on fabric, as well as a wide range of weaving topics.

The conference will have an incredible lineup of local, regional and
national vendors – from Habu Textiles with its unique Japanese
yarns, to Kai Mohair with her handspun mohair yarns, to local artist
Dottie Wood with her wonderful enamels, Helstrom's Gallery from
Colorado Springs and Colores del Pueblo from Houston with their textiles
and tribal jewelry from Asia and South America. There will be something
for everyone – weavers and non weavers who just love fiber:
hand-dyed yarns, stainless steel silk, bamboo, fine cottons and linens,
mohair, alpaca, silk and llama. There will be kits for weavers and
knitters as well as tools for weavers, spinners, felters, silk fusion,
beaders.

And best of all, the vendors hall and the exhibits are open to the
public free of charge. These are the hours:

Vendor Hall - open noon to 5 pm and 7- 10pm on Friday

In addition, there will be an invitational exhibit – Warp Is Not
Enough – organized by the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.
The exhibit will feature work from four internationally recognized fiber
artists: Bonnie Inouye, James Koehler, Ann Matlock and Anita Luvera
Mayer. The range of work shown includes large scale tapestries that
reflect the rhythmic, repetitive yet unpredictable process inherent in
the natural world, intricate tapestries of subtly shaded natural forms
executed with handspun and dyed silk, contemporary clothing inspired by
ethnic originals with embellishments done by hand, and handwovens
characterized by flowing lines, translucent colors, intriguing textures
and bold images.
