Mind you, I used

"Don't turn your backs upon them, the little beggers bite!
Their cunning none surpasses, you know they'll go far"

rather than "darlings" (a cleaned up version of my first choice <G>), 
and think the shorter version scans better.
And it may have been that trip with you, Dormouse and myself crammed 
into a Mazda GLC.
But we made many trips together.
