interesting shows on pearl harbor "myths" including the minisub's yesterday.
in the sub section, they were primarily trying to account for the 5th
"missing" one (only one that likely got its twin torpedo's off inside the
harbor defenses). show showed dive footage of the sub the Ward sank on the
bottom - exactly where contact was reported and with shell hole damage on
the coning tower where it was reported they hit it with a deck gun ... first
Japanese pow of the war was a commander of one of the other mini subs that
had mechanical failures and ran aground

Sorry but "Sighted Sub, Sank Same". was said by AMM 1/C Donald Francis mason

on 28/January/1942 off the coast of Newfoundland when he thought he had
sunk a U-boat. (One source for this quote is the naval Historical Center in
Washington, D.C..There are too many others to list.)
The message sent by the Ward about the mini sub said that they had attacked,

fired upon and dropped depth charges on a submarine operating in defensive
waters. They were asked to confirm and they did, adding "with gunfire" to
the original message. This happened at 0643 on 7/Dec/1941. The message was
sent by FLC Ken Swendberg who was only 20 years old at the time.

Shalom,
Bertha
