There is also quite a bit of freeware available if you have access to a
computer. just look up "personal library software" and you will get many
hits. there are also several online services (free) like LibraryThing, which
will do the cataloging for you by finding your item and "copying" the
cataloging information from available records. Takes all the work out of it
for you. They may have bought into OCLC and be paying for the record
information the same way a normal library has to, but I have a feeling this
is not the case. in any case most of the cataloging information on any
particular item can be freely viewed on any public library's catalog.
by the way, many librarians (like me) use LibraryThing for our own
libraries...
in most of the programs all you have to do is type the title or isbn and if
they don't have an exact match they will suggest on keywords. generally
pretty useful!
